Ingredients
Scale
- 6–8 medium Apples (about 2.5 lbs / 1.1 kg)
- 1 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour (190g, for the topping)
- ¼ cup Granulated Sugar (50g, for the filling, adjust to taste)
- ½ cup Brown Sugar (100g, packed, for the topping)
- ¾ cup Unsalted Butter (cold, 170g, for the topping)
- ½ cup Rolled Oats (45g, for the topping)
- 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon Nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon Salt (for the topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar 2-quart capacity oven-safe dish.
- Peel, core, and slice your chosen apples into roughly 1/4-inch thick pieces.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss everything together gently until the apples are evenly coated. Let them sit for about 10-15 minutes.
- Once rested, transfer the apple mixture to your prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly.
- In a separate large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, and salt. Whisk them together until they are well combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or two knives, work the butter into the dry ingredients until you have a coarse, crumbly mixture with some pea-sized chunks of butter remaining.
- Evenly sprinkle the prepared crumble topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
- Place the baking dish on a baking sheet to catch any potential drips.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is beautifully golden brown and crispy, and the apple filling is bubbling at the edges.
- Once baked, carefully remove the crumble from the oven. Let it cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving.

Keywords: To enhance the apple flavor, consider sautéing the apples in butter before baking. For a crispier topping, ensure your butter is cold and avoid overmixing the topping ingredients.
